One year after losing one of their own in a tragic house fire, members of the Taylor (Indiana) Fire Department find themselves under attack. Someone goes on a brutal killing rampage and firefighters are the preferred target.

As the murders become more brazen—even slaughtering multiple victims at once—Police Chief Erica Kaden and Detective Daniel Cribbs pour themselves into the investigation. As the police department gets stretched thin trying to protect the remaining firefighters, some are convinced the killer is one of the firemen. Several eyes focus on Jake Norton, who had quit the TFD on his downward alcohol-infused spiral after losing his brother in that fatal inferno a year ago. Others believe the murderer can’t possibly be human.

Ellie Beck, a current firefighter and former love interest of Jake, is convinced that he is not involved in the carnage. She teams up with Alice Durnell, who was severely injured in one of the attacks, to search for clues within their own department. While examining a perfectly preserved wooly mammoth, scientists at the Raven-Miller Research Institute discover the existence of prehistoric insect chrysalises.  When the first cocoon surprisingly hatches and the large moth reveals itself, they aren’t prepared for the consequences of the predatory insect.  Primarily focused on studying the creature to determine how such a complex animal could survive a long-term hibernation, they fail to contain the moth and its parasitic larvae.

Agents Braden and Caretta are called into action when two of the victims fail to respond to another employee at the facility (Caretta’s sister, Clair Boyd).  With the help of Dr. Amanda Witherspoon, the Special Branch medical analyst, they discover one of the parasites and try to put an end to the experiment before it reaches an epidemic level.
